What a thorough service can involve
Professional servicing is tailored to the machine and fault. Depending on condition and parts availability, a technician may inspect transport mechanics, rubber components, brakes, bearings, pinch rollers, electronic boards, capacitors, tape-path geometry and record/playback alignment.
Before you contact an engineer
- Record the manufacturer, exact model, serial number and electrical supply specification.
- Describe the symptoms, last known service, and whether the issue occurs during play, record, rewind or fast-forward.
- Photograph the deck and any error indications; never run damaged or sticky tape through it.
- Ask about diagnostic charges, estimate approvals, available parts and expected handling procedures.
- Agree the preferred calibration standard: tape speed, track format, reference fluxivity and NAB/IEC equalisation as applicable.
- For valuable decks, arrange suitable packing, insured transport and written custody terms.
Safety and calibration
Older mains-powered equipment can retain dangerous voltages when disconnected. Electronic repairs, bias calibration and alignment should be performed by qualified technicians with the correct documentation, instruments and reference tapes.
